The master lineup of iconic shows that shaped our pop-culture landscape.
When we need a break from the tyranny of reality -- from the forces of injustice and political extremism, Wall Street baddies and corrupt politicians -- there's the sweet escapism only 22 or 42 minutes of scripted life can provide.
It offers a fictional breeze that leaves viewers refreshed, stronger, more savvy. (And it doesn't hurt that on TV, evil has a name and can often be satisfyingly zapped with a little abracadabra or some good old-fashioned wrestling).
Escapism has other benefits as well. Pop-culture literacy is as helpful as historical literacy when it comes to understanding today's world (then leaving the couch to wrestle with real-life villains). And although you might want to peruse the current offerings of the thousand-channel universe, DVD store and download sites, a look to the past, in the form of TV gems from the last few decades, can be just what the doctor ordered.
Look, old TV can be like old jokes -- there's sometimes a best-by date. But old TV can also shine its square, glowing light on today's society. Knowing about Buffy the Vampire Slayer makes you culturally literate in a similar way to Catcher in the Rye. J.R. Ewing from Dallas can be just as instructive as Macbeth or Hamlet.
There are plenty of attempts to list the best TV shows of all time -- some magazines publish one yearly. But this isn't that. This is an admittedly incomplete and subjective list of the 10 sexiest, most stylish shows (that also happen to have cultural significance), because I've noticed they're the ones I hear people talking about the most (go figure).
I'm not suggesting you watch all episodes of every series below -- unless you enjoy pop-culture masochism -- just a few minutes or one episode. Just so that next time someone tells you "the truth is out there," you see the light.
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)
Unless you're a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan (you're rolling your eyes, I know), you probably don't know that Buffy was an ordinary girl with extraordinary powers who completely changed the horror genre and the definition of an action hero. She was the kind of pretty, tiny girl who used to walk down a dark alley … cue scary music and screams. But in Buffy, which still gets exhaustively studied in universities and books, Buffy is the tiny, pretty girl who kills the vampires, ghouls and other evil, then goes home to help her sister (they're orphans) study for a science quiz.
She kicked vampire and sexist butt, and in so doing, became a kind of postfeminist hero(ine) and icon. As the creator, Joss Whedon explained, "The very first mission statement of the show was the joy of female power: having it, using it, sharing it." That's worth 42 minutes.
( shows ranked at number two to ten )

I saw these banners up for a short time now on George st in the city while i've been catching my bus to Hunters Hill each morning to placement. Been meaning to take a photo of them so yesterday when i went to the movies with a friend I remembered to bring my camera. Also one evening the over week, just near where i took these photos i saw the town hall lit up green, obviously something else to do with Wicked and they were playing some songs but i didn't see anyone performing anything :( But I will be going to see the musical in a few weeks time and I cannot simply wait :D hehe

Tonight the 14th season of The Amazing Race aired here in Australia. For the past few years at least my mother and I have watched the show together when it’s on. My mum has been watching it longer though. I gotta say out of all the ‘reality’ based shows I loved this one and this is the only i watch I guess.
But from tonight’s episode one of the tasks was hilarious and really difficult to complete. The video of this is what I have included in this post.
And I’ve decided each week I’ll included a quote that stood out said by one of the participants but not always a video.
( spoilers under the cut )
:D :D

Rock Musician Files Lawsuit over Dog's Mysterious Death
The drummer for the rock band My Chemical Romance is suing a dog trainer after the musician's beloved German shepherd mix died in the trainer's care – and was returned in the form of cremated remains, according to court papers.
In a bizarre lawsuit filed in Burbank Superior Court, Bob Bryar alleges breach of contract, fraud, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress against Daniel Schaffer, described in the action as the self-proclaimed "dog trainer to the stars."
"I don't even know what happened to my best friend and miss her more than anything in the world," Bryar tells PEOPLE. "The devastation I feel is beyond words."
Acting on a referral, Bryar says he spent $7,500 in April to send his dog Dixie – "the most important thing in his life," according to the lawsuit – to Schaffer's kennel for intense training to help the emotionally fragile, formerly abused rescue dog adjust to a new dog in the household.
About a week later, after previously telling Bryar that the dog had been "having a blast and partying all day," Schaffer reported that Dixie was killed when a drunk driver struck the vehicle in which Schaffer was carrying Dixie and other dogs, according to the lawsuit.
Later that evening, "Schaffer called (Bryar) again and informed him that he could not say goodbye to Dixie for she had been 'cremated due to her condition,'" the lawsuit says. Two days later, the trainer "delivered an urn allegedly containing Dixie's remains," the suit says. After Schaffer failed to produce a police report documenting the crash, he changed his story and said Dixie died in her sleep, then changed that story to say she died under other circumstances, the suit says.
Schaffer didn't return messages seeking comment. No response has yet been filed to Bryar's lawsuit.
